Generative engine optimization: a practical GEO workflow for brands
Generative engine optimization (GEO) usually describes work intended to help a brand’s content be discovered, understood and cited in generated answers. The terminology is still evolving. Focus on reliable information and buyer discovery rather than treating GEO as a shortcut to guaranteed AI recommendations.
GEO vs SEO vs AEO
SEO focuses on discovery in search results. AEO emphasizes answering questions directly. GEO emphasizes visibility within generated responses that may combine multiple sources. These are overlapping working labels, not three separate technical systems. The same accessible, specific and credible page can support all three without duplicating its content.
Make your business facts consistent
Check the company name, service definitions, phone, pricing scope and public location details across the website and profiles you control. Remove obsolete information. Explain who the offer fits and what it excludes. Consistency makes the facts easier to interpret; it does not itself establish that a model trusts or recommends your business.
Publish evidence another source can inspect
Useful evidence includes documented processes, clearly defined measurements, source-backed explanations and authorized case studies. Explain the starting point and limitations of any result you publish. If the evidence is unavailable, leave the number out. A long article assembled from generic summaries adds little reason for a buyer—or a search system—to prefer it.
Review access separately for each system
Crawling, search retrieval and model training are different uses. Review current provider documentation before changing robots rules. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for search and GPTBot for potential training use as separate controls. Allowing a crawler does not guarantee inclusion, and changing training permissions does not provide a reliable visibility forecast.
- Check robots rules, indexability, canonical URLs and internal discovery.
- Keep important content readable without a login or a required interaction.
- Decide crawler permissions intentionally using current provider guidance.
- Do not weaken privacy or access controls to pursue citations.
Run repeatable citation checks
Create a sample of real buyer questions covering service selection, cost and alternatives. Record the system, date, question, cited URLs and accuracy of business facts. Distinguish a citation of your page from an unlinked mention. Repeat the sample consistently, but acknowledge variation rather than reporting a single answer as a permanent rank.
Connect observations to business outcomes
Look for referred visits where available, branded searches and qualified inquiries. Some discovery leaves no click or a clearly labeled referral, so attribution will be incomplete. Ask new prospects how they found you and keep that response separate from tracked source fields. Evaluate the work alongside search performance rather than attributing every improvement to GEO.
Matching service and a related measurement case
AI-Visible Websites is the matching service. The linked CRM case study provides an adjacent measurement example only; it is not evidence that Ideabazi has achieved GEO citations or traffic for that client.

Frequently asked questions
What is generative engine optimization?
Generative engine optimization describes practices intended to make a brand’s useful content easier to discover, interpret and cite in AI-generated answers. It overlaps with SEO and answer-focused writing. The term does not describe a guaranteed placement system, and different AI products may retrieve and present sources differently.
Can GEO guarantee a ChatGPT recommendation?
No provider can reliably guarantee that ChatGPT or another generative system will recommend a business for every relevant question. Responses vary with the question, context, retrieval and product. Improve source quality and accessibility, then record observed citations and qualified inquiries without turning occasional visibility into an unsupported universal claim.
Is GEO a replacement for SEO?
No. GEO should build on accessible, useful pages and consistent business facts rather than replace SEO. Google says ordinary SEO practices remain relevant to its AI features. Track conventional search performance alongside sampled AI citations, and prioritize improvements that help real buyers even when no generated answer links to them.
